I am on a GLP-1 for obesity, what do I need to do with Vida for my prescription to be approved?

Starting 8/1/2025, members newly prescribed a GLP-1 for obesity like Zepbound, Wegovy and Saxenda will need to enroll in and continue to engage with Vida monthly to get their prescription approved and filled at the pharmacy.  Engagement could include completing a consultation with your Vida coach, completing educational content and lessons curated for you, and tracking habits and metrics such as weight that will help you achieve your goals.  All of this is intended to provide support for your weight loss management needs, including how to help you eat the right, balanced food and meals, incorporate exercise and help deal with stress and side effects.

Current users can continue their treatment through December 31, 2025, without any changes. However, starting January 1, 2026, the new requirements (Nebraska Medicine provider/pharmacy + behavioral program) will apply.

Why is Nebraska Medicine making this change to their GLP-1 strategy?

  • This change supports Nebraska Medicine’s commitment to colleague well-being and sustainable healthcare by:
  • Evolving best practices: Pairing GLP-1 medications with structured behavioral support enhances long-term success and sustainability.
  • We are confident in the high-quality care Nebraska Medicine providers deliver and the robust support they offer.
  • Preserving access for individuals with type 2 diabetes, which remains unchanged

What if I don’t want to participate in a behavioral program — can I still get the medication?

  • Participation in a behavioral lifestyle intervention program is a requirement for coverage of GLP-1 medications for weight management under the Nebraska Medicine pharmacy benefits plan. This approach is grounded in clinical evidence that shows significantly better outcomes when medication is paired with structured behavioral support.
  • If you choose not to participate in the program, you will not be eligible for coverage of GLP-1 medications for weight loss through the plan. However, you may still choose to access these medications outside of the plan by paying the full cost out of pocket. This is a personal choice, and we encourage you to speak with a healthcare provider about the best approach for your individual needs.

What kind of outcomes are expected from this new approach?

Studies show that combining GLP-1s with lifestyle and behavioral support significantly improves weight loss sustainability, overall health, and long-term wellbeing. This change aligns with best practices in obesity treatment and chronic disease management.

If I’m diabetic, do I HAVE to participate in Vida?

If you have diabetes, participation in the Vida program is optional.  However, if you are on the Nebraska Medicine medical plan, you do have full access to Vida’s resources at no cost to you, which can provide personalized coaching, expert guidance, and support for managing diabetes effectively. Many participants find that Vida helps improve their health outcomes and overall well-being.

Why do I have to stay with Vida?  I’m in maintenance.

Great question!  The maintenance phase of a behavioral modification program is just as crucial as the initial weight loss phase. While someone may have reached their goal, maintaining that success requires ongoing strategies to prevent relapse and ensure long-term stability.  Keeping certain elements, like goal setting, self-monitoring, and social support, can make a big difference in sustaining progress.

Will this impact coverage for other weight loss medications or services?

This change specifically applies to GLP-1 medications used for weight management. There remain non-GLP-1 options for weight loss that are covered under the plan, and those options are not affected by this policy.

My doctor has prescribed me a GLP-1. How must I engage with Vida before picking up my prescription?

You must engage with Vida before the first dose can be picked up. You do not need to meet with a coach first, but you must complete the onboarding process — including providing health info, getting a program recommendation, and selecting a program. This counts as an engagement for Month 1 and allows the claim to be processed.  Eligibility files are sent daily from Vida to CapitalRx.  It may take 2 days depending upon timing to be able to pick up your prescription.

Who is eligible for Vida through Nebraska Medicine?

Vida is available at no additional cost to Nebraska Medicine colleagues and covered family members (age 19 and older) enrolled in the Nebraska Medicine medical plans who meet any of the following criteria: taking a GLP-1 for weight loss, have diabetes or prediabetes, or have a BMI over 25.

I tried to enroll in Vida or I am engaged in Vida but recently received notification that I am unable to enroll/continue in Vida due to a Vida program exclusion such as chemotherapy, transplant, eating disorder, pregnancy, end-stage kidney/liver disease etc.  What do I do to get my GLP-1 for obesity filled.

If you’re not eligible to participate in Vida, a process is in place for reviewing cases on an individual basis, allowing for exceptions or appeals when appropriate.

Are Vida coaches Registered Dietitians?

How do I choose my coach?

After you have signed up for Vida and logged into the Vida Health app, we’ll ask you a few questions, including what kind of coaching style you’d like. What motivates you? A cheerleader, listener, drill sergeant, or something else? We’ll recommend some coaches that could be a good fit and then the choice is up to you. You may also decide on your coach based on when their first availability is.

Can I change coaches if it doesn’t work out with my first coach?

Absolutely. To request a change, go to the home screen in your Vida app, tap the gear icon in the upper right, then tap Request New Coach. You’ll complete a brief survey so we can match you with a new coach that’s the best fit for your style and goals.
