What is Vida Health?
Vida is a virtual health program that offers personalized weight loss, chronic condition management, prevention and lifestyle programs with live, one-on-one support from an expert care team — all through an easy-to-use mobile app and website.
When you sign up with Vida, you’ll share your health goals and preferences. Vida will use that information to tailor a program to your needs, and you’ll pick a coach to support you along the way. Your program will include helpful resources like videos, lessons, recipes, and more, plus easy progress tracking. You’ll also be able to connect your fitness trackers or health devices (see most common list in “Third-Party Devices and Apps” below).
Who is eligible for Vida?
The Vida Health program is available at no additional cost to Sutter Health Plan members 18 years and older. To find out if you are a Sutter Health Plan member, click here.
What kind of health coaching can I receive through Vida?
At Vida, we handpick the best coaches and health experts from across the country. Our coaches and providers can help you reach your personal goals. Here are a few examples of things we can help with:
- Weight loss
- Nutrition, including support for specialized diets (gluten-free, paleo, vegan, keto, and more)
- Exercise and strength training
- Coping with stress
- Improving sleep
- Support for health conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol
- Tackling pre-diabetes or other risk factors so they don’t lead to chronic disease
Can I participate even if I don’t have a chronic condition?
Yes. Whether you are looking to get (or stay) fit, lose weight, handle stress, prevent disease, manage a chronic condition, or meet another health goal, we have expert coaches available to help.
What are Vida’s weight loss programs like?
There are two weight loss programs available through Vida. Based on completion of a health and personal goals assessment, you may be placed in one of the following programs:
- Preventive Weight Loss: This program focuses on behavior change. You will have your own dedicated health coach working with you to personalize diet and exercise plans that are a good fit for you and your goals. In this program, in addition to weekly coaching sessions, you will have the option to in-app message your coach and group chat with other people committed to losing weight. You will also have the option to connect devices such as a smart scale to help you track your progress. Members in this program lose an average of 5% or more of their body weight in 12 months.
- Clinical Weight Loss: This program is tailored for members with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater who would benefit from additional clinical oversight and support. In addition to a health coach who is a registered dietitian, your care team may also include a medical provider. The Clinical Weight Loss program focuses on behavior change, including medical nutrition therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Can I change coaches if it doesn’t work out with my first coach?
Absolutely. To request a change, go to the Home screen in your Vida app, tap the gear icon in the upper right, then tap Request New Coach. You’ll complete a brief survey so we can match you with a new coach that’s the best fit for your style and goals.
How do I schedule appointments?
You can schedule an appointment directly through the app from the Home screen.
I am a Sutter Health Plan member and I would like to begin taking a weight loss drug. Am I required to participate in Vida to have my weight loss drug covered?
Yes. Members who initiate coverage for weight loss drugs after March 1, 2026, must enroll and engage in Vida for six months prior to Sutter Health Plan providing weight loss drug coverage.
To maintain Sutter Health Plan coverage for weight loss drugs, the member must remain enrolled in the Vida program with active monthly engagement for the duration of taking the weight loss drug.
Each month you must participate in Vida program activities (like meeting with your health coach or completing a program lesson) to meet the active monthly engagement requirements. Vida will let Sutter Health Plan know when you’ve completed the initial and ongoing activities required for each month.

Do I need prior authorization from Sutter Health Plan for weight loss drug coverage?
Certain weight loss drugs require prior authorization approval for coverage. Vida can provide additional information regarding weight loss drug prior authorization criteria.

I am a current Sutter Health Plan member and I have a prior authorization for a weight loss drug. Am I required to participate in Vida to keep my weight loss drug coverage?
Not yet. The Vida enrollment requirements do not apply to members with prior authorization approvals granted prior to March 1, 2026, until their current prior authorization approval expires.
Once a prior authorization approval granted before March 1, 2026, expires, the member must enroll in Vida and meet the active monthly engagement requirements for continued weight loss drug coverage.

I am a new Sutter Health Plan member and I am currently taking a weight loss drug that was covered by my previous health plan. Do I still need to participate in the Vida program for six months prior to receiving weight loss drug coverage?
No. New members seeking coverage for the continuation of weight loss drug therapy are not required to actively participate in the Vida program for six months prior to qualifying for drug coverage.
However, the member must enroll in the Vida program and meet the active monthly engagement requirement to receive Sutter Health Plan coverage for weight loss drugs.
Benefit coverage requirements and utilization management apply, including limitations when a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is prescribed for a use that is different than the FDA’s approved indication (often called “off-label use”).
I am not a new Sutter Health Plan member and I am currently taking a weight loss drug but have never received Sutter Health Plan weight loss drug coverage. Do I still need to participate in the Vida program for six months prior to receiving weight loss drug coverage?
No. Current members seeking coverage for the continuation of weight loss drug therapy who have not received weight loss drug coverage from Sutter Health Plan in the past are not required to actively participate in the Vida program for six months prior to drug coverage.
However, the member must enroll in the Vida program and meet the active monthly engagement requirements to receive Sutter Health Plan coverage for weight loss drugs.
Benefit coverage requirements and utilization management apply, including limitations when a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is prescribed for a use that is different than the FDA’s approved indication (often called “off-label use”).
What does active monthly engagement mean?
- Engaging with Vida in each of three types of ongoing activities at the specified frequencies:
- Provider interaction: Complete a consultation with a Vida provider or participate in a synchronous group coaching session one time per month and
- Biometric monitoring: Measure and record a health goal or outcome metric either manually or through a connected device one time per week, three out of four weeks and
- Self-paced learning: Complete a program unit or related educational content (such as a lesson, health screener, content card, worksheet, guided video) one time per week, two out of four weeks.
Vida is an independent vendor, and its services for Sutter Health Plan members are limited to a weight loss and chronic condition management program. Vida is solely responsible for its products and services as well as its website and mobile application.
