Creating healthy routines for yourself

A lack of time is one of the biggest reasons we tell ourselves we can’t get around to working out, sleeping more, or eating better. With 24 hours in a day even the most demanding schedule can be supported by developing strong health routines. Health routines are simply small ways that we regularly take care of our own health. Here are some tips for how to get more of a health routine in your life:

  • Put your workouts on your calendar (in fact, put anything you REALLY want or need to do on your calendar…even if you are scheduling playtime with your kids).
  • Pack your workout gear and healthy snacks and/or lunch the night before.
  • Set a timer about 1 hour before you intend to go to bed to start your night- time wind-down routine.
  • Establish a night-time wind-down routine that includes prepping any final needs for the next day, getting your food packed, filling your water bottle to take with you for the morning, doing light reading or taking a bath or shower each night.
  • Keep a note-pad next to your bed so you can quickly jot down any last minute thoughts or needs as you drift off to sleep.
  • Go to bed and wake up at generally the same time every day.
  • Reserve time every Sunday evening to review the week ahead.
  • Write down 3 things every evening you are grateful for.
  • Keep one water bottle at home and one at work and develop a habit of keeping it full even after you drink.
