Goal Sticking: Working Through Challenges

By now you are familiar with the SMART goal process. If you are having challenges with a specific goal ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is your goal to big? Trying to do too much too soon can be a confidence killer. Scale back a little bit. Sticking with your smaller goal will help build up the confidence you need to work up to larger goals.
  • Has something in your life changed making it harder to stick to your original plan? If your work schedule changes for example, you might need to change up your exercise routine or prepare meals for the week on a different day.
  • Is this goal realistic for you? Sometimes we set goals because it is what we think we should do not what we want to do. For example, your exercise goal involves going to the gym. You have tried going to the gym in the past but had a hard time sticking with it because you don’t enjoy going to the gym. What might be a more realistic (and enjoyable) exercise goal?

Be a detective! Take a problem solving approach when it comes to challenges. Whatever you do, don’t give up!
